COMMANDER’S MESSAGE: DONALD BAUMGART
I want to thank the membership for allowing me to serve a second year as your commander. The installation was August 8th and it went exceedingly well. I would like to thank SVC Al Krenz for providing the delicious and tasty food for the reception, courtesy of Noodles and Company in
Looking forward, in the new year we have some chairmanships that need to be filled. We have established a Public Relations Committee and EC Gigi Callaway has agreed to be chairperson. We still need chairpersons for Americanism, Poppy Day, GTTY and a few others. If you are interested or can help, please call me or leave a message at the Post.
We’ve been able to get some new Bingo callers and they are very well accepted. Thanks for volunteering!! EC Gigi Callaway and Florence Valdes, who is an Auxiliary member, and of course there is the ever popular Dan Hamilton who has graduated from runner to caller; Dan has that melodious voice everyone loves. Thanks to all for stepping up to help out.
The Post is changing, but it still needs your help. Take on one of the many projects and see what you can do and the enjoyment you get from your accomplishment. We also have some new ladies working in the Bingo kitchen:
This year is going to be a very busy year also. A lot of things to accomplish. We have some major expenses to address on the facility - new roof, tuck pointing, parking lot resurfacing and air conditioning.
Please pay close ATTENTION to the schedule of meetings. I will designate if they are social or business and/or combined in the preceding newsletter. The October meeting will be a business meeting.
SR. VICE COMMANDER’S MSG: AL KRENZ
As I now transition from Jr. Vice Commander to Sr. Vice Commander, I now need to think membership, membership, and membership. I have been tutored by Cmdr. Baumgart on the intricacies of the position and have made good headway with the initial processing of membership renewals. However, our post needs more than everyone renewing their membership; we need to attract new members. Surely many of you know eligible veterans that have been”too busy” to consider joining our ranks or had family or business responsibilities that precluded their joining. Ladies and gentlemen, now is the time to approach these people and invite them to see what the American Legion is all about. Or, let me know the person’s name and phone number and I will personally contact them. I and the post, need your help on this. Additionally, if you haven’t renewed your membership for 2011 yet, please do so.
As I mentioned previously, the initial mailing of Fall Fest raffle tickets have been mailed. To cut costs every member did not receive tickets. If you want tickets for yourself or to sell please inform me and I will be glad to send them out and next year you will be on our mailing list for tickets. Use my e-mail address or call me at home.
The remaining ticket sale schedule is as follows:
• September 11th & 12th - Sam’s Club/Hodgkins
• September 18th & 19th - Jewel/Countryside
Please help with these two sale days at local business establishments. I will have sign-up sheets at bingo on Monday nights. I may call you and ask for a time-block commitment. How about a commitment from some of our younger post members? Most of the volunteers have been in their 70's. Remember, Fall Fest raffle ticket sales are a substantial source of income for the post. Please try to sell as many as you can. You may e-mail me at akrenz993@sbcglobal.net or call at 708-352-0751.
Finally, I have received minimal response for the actual event dinner reservations and payment. Please do not wait until the last week to send your reservations (and money) in. I do have to order the food prior to the event and cannot accept walk-ins on the day of the event.
JR. VICE COMMANDER’S MSG: WILLIAM MANDERS
Our next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 15, 2010. It is a social meeting. We will show a video titled The World War II Memorial: a Testament to Freedom. The video follows the process of conceiving and creating the National World War II Memorial – from the sculptor’s studios, to the stone quarries, to the construction site itself. It features interviews with key artists and craftsman, plus political figures and art consultants involved in the decisions and controversies. Woven into the story of constructing the memorial are interviews with WWII veterans and those on the home front. The video features bonus footage from the dedication ceremony.
This video is 60 minutes long so we will pause it about half way through so that attendees can enjoy the refreshments we will serve while they enjoy the second half of the video.
If you have other ideas for social meetings, topics, please contact me at williammanders@sbcglobal.net or call me at work 708-552-2361, or at home 708-839-4036.
A MEMORIAL REMINDER:
If you suggest a memorial donation to our Post in the name of any member, living or deceased, please word the notice to have checks made out payable to the Robert E. Coulter, Jr. Post 1941. You can specify what program in our Post you may want to support. If you elect the scholarship fund it is the ALBERT DAHM SCHOLARSHIP FUND. Checks should not be made payable to this fund, just a notation, please. Banking rules and regulations have changed and we cannot deposit any checks into any of our accounts that are not made payable to the Post. Thank you.
